Comment  : Dear Virtual Hill Tribe Museum, I stumbled across your website and to my surprise found that you had a section about the Hmong people. After reading the information you provided in the section "Hmong America", being that I am Hmong and I grew up in America, I felt some of what you said was harsh. Also, though some of your information about the Hmong people is accurate some of it is less fact more oral interpretation. For example, you state that the Hmong people are immigrants from Tibet, Siberia, and Mongolia. The truth is, there is no actual historic evidence that links the Hmong people to any of these countries or ethnicities. The earliest historically documented mentioning of the Hmong people dates back to 400 A.D. China. On or around this time the Hmong were already settled in China for quite a while. Tragically they were driven out by the Sung dynasty and from then on disbursed over southern China and northern Laos. As for your statements about the generation of Hmong people who grew up in America, we all do not just sing, dance, or have an interest in the entertainment industry. Believe or not there are much more successful and well known Hmong Americans who are doctors, lawyers, politicians or teachers than there are Hmong Americans who have made it in the entertainment industry. Also, with any integration into a modern era, culture is lost. This doesn't mean that Hmong Americans have forgotten their culture or traditions. The leaders of our communities continue to do many wonderful things such as offering Hmong history classes in colleges or opening elementary schools for Hmong children, all these things are done in order to preserve our culture and traditions. Now, about your comment in regards to Hmong Americans using “welfare” and the “education” system; yes, some Hmong families do have to resort to using welfare in order to survive, but do keep in mind that welfare was created long before the Hmong people came to the United States, and yes, the Hmong people have definitely utilized the education in America to their advantage but where is the problem in that? If education is given freely, whether you’re Hmong, Mien, Lahu, Laos, Thai, African, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, etc., you’d want to be able to educate yourself if the opportunity arises. You should not condemn Hmong Americans for wanting to be educated. All in all if you're going to have a "Hmong" section on your website, I feel you should gather more accurate and up to date information about the Hmong people. If you refuse to or can't find this information, I suggest you take us off your website altogether as I would rather my people (Hmong) not be on this site then see them misrepresented. Thank you.

Comment  : Wonderful website! I am a "small head" Mien living in the U.S. I stumbled across this website in search for something else and couldn't stop reading. I am definitely more informed about other hill people and of my own people. (For those who may not be familiar with Miens there are several subcatagories of Miens. One of them is the Classification of tribes, "small head" and "big head" Miens. They dialect is pretty much the same with some difference and the turbans are worn differently.) I plan to visit Laos and Thailand in the Near future and will use this website as a guide to my destinations =)

The almost 100K killed in China from the earthquake and the 100K killed in the typhoon in Myanmar are barely enough to scratch the surface.
