Karen Hmong Mien Lahu Lisu Akha Other

An overlooked part of the Akha Swing Ceremony is the construction of the Ga-la-la-cher or Akha Ferris Wheel. Constructed only of wood and bamboo and often without the use of nails, the Akha Ferris Wheel represents the clever engineering skills of the Akha people.

Men, women, or children can ride on the Akha Ferris Wheel, but it is important that the four people riding at any given time must be of approximately the same weight, otherwise the wheel can come whipping around dangerously fast as the heaviest person descends the arc from top to bottom.
